3 phase systems
Those businesses requiring a large power demand will be attached to a three phase distribution system usually providing 400 volts instead of the typical 230 volts arrangement. A three phase system is made up of three 'line' conductors, one 'neutral' conductor and earth. You may see these labelled as 'L1', 'L2', 'L3', 'N' and 'E'.
If you are unsure if you have a three phase system please do not hesitate to ask us for advice, alternatively in some cases you may be able to see three electric meters where your building's feed comes in, or your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) such as Electricity NorthWest may be able to tell you if a three phase system is present in your building.
Due to its high voltage, and multiple live conductors, 3-phase systems can be very dangerous to work on if you are not competent to do so. It is always advised to consult a competent, trained person if you require electrical work involving a three phase system. Please contact us via our 'contact us' page to discuss your requirements.
